FDA Approves Expandable Heart Valve for Children

FDA Approves Expandable Heart Valve for Children

For families caring for a child with a heart condition, treatment decisions can bring difficult questions: How long will an implant last? What happens as their child gets bigger? Could another operation become necessary?

A new FDA approval offers a promising option.

A valve that can be enlarged

On October 1, the FDA approved the Autus Size-Adjustable Valve for children with congenital pulmonary valve disease. Surgically implanted, it can later be expanded with a balloon catheter—from approximately 13 to 22 millimeters—to accommodate growth.

It does not grow automatically. Expansion requires a medical procedure. The goal is to reduce repeat open-heart surgeries, not guarantee that a child will never need another operation.

The valve also uses synthetic polymer leaflets instead of animal tissue.

What the research shows

The approval relied on a study involving 62 children. Early blood-flow results were encouraging, but some participants experienced frame fractures or reduced leaflet movement without symptoms. Two children whose valve performance deteriorated as they outgrew it underwent successful expansion.

Expansion experience remains limited, and longer-term studies are underway.

Questions families can ask

A child’s treatment plan should reflect their individual condition. At a pediatric cardiology appointment, parents can ask:

  • Is my child’s condition suitable for this valve?
  • How does it compare with other available treatments?
  • What risks should we consider?
  • When might expansion be needed?
  • What follow-up visits and monitoring would be required?
  • Is the device available at our hospital, and what does our insurance cover?

Bring a list of questions and ask the care team to explain unfamiliar terms. Understanding the purpose of each procedure can help families take part in treatment decisions.
